PurposeNine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Screen (NIAS) — administration and scoring reference.

Administration

Use the selected validated NIAS form and examine the three eating-pattern dimensions separately.

Scoring method

Picky eating, appetite and fear subscales; clinical assessment needed.

Interpretation & limitations

  • Interpret picky eating, low appetite and fear-related restriction in the context of nutrition, medical consequences and alternative explanations.
  • Interpret the findings alongside the clinical interview, functioning, history and relevant physical assessment.
  • A NIAS result does not establish ARFID or exclude weight/shape-related eating disorders. Population-specific thresholds need their own validation source.
  • Use the original instrument and manual for item wording, rating anchors, missing-data rules and any normative conversions. This reference does not establish a diagnosis or select treatment.
