PurposeCRAFFT adolescent substance-use screening — administration and scoring reference.

Administration

Use the age-appropriate CRAFFT 2.1 form in a confidential clinical setting and follow its opening-use and continuation sequence.

Scoring method

Version-specific screening and branching; select current validated edition and age range.

Interpretation & limitations

  • Review substance-use concerns and riding/driving exposure separately. The added nicotine section in 2.1+N has its own role.
  • Interpret the findings alongside the clinical interview, functioning, history and relevant physical assessment.
  • Do not treat omitted questions after branching as a completed all-no interview, or extrapolate youth screening findings to adult populations.
  • Use the original instrument and manual for item wording, rating anchors, missing-data rules and any normative conversions. This reference does not establish a diagnosis or select treatment.
