Indications & formulation #

Acute manic or mixed episodes in adults; not a conversion table. This reference covers the selected formulation; other indications and products need their own evidence.

Dose reference #

Adult educational reference · Divalproex sodium oral extended-release tablet · United States. The clinician selects treatment after assessment; this page does not calculate or change a prescription.

Selected ER mania start: 25 mg/kg once daily, clinician-titrated to response and levels; maximum 60 mg/kg/day. This is reference text, not a weight-based calculator.

Contraindications & important cautions #

Contraindications include significant hepatic disease, urea-cycle disorders and relevant POLG disorders. Assess pancreatitis, thrombocytopenia and hyperammonemia.

Selected important cautions; consult the full product information for all contraindications and warnings.

Adverse effects #

Weight gain, tremor, thrombocytopenia, hepatic injury and reproductive harm.

Interactions #

Valproate raises lamotrigine exposure; carbapenems can markedly lower valproate concentrations.

Monitoring #

Monitor blood count/platelets, hepatic function, symptoms and appropriately interpreted levels.

Special populations #

Major fetal and neurodevelopmental risks require specialist reproductive counseling and applicable prevention requirements. Older adults need slower titration and intake monitoring.

Adult scope. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and pediatric use require the exact product’s population-specific guidance and individual assessment.

Discontinuation, restarting & counseling #

Do not abruptly stop when seizures are also treated. ER, delayed-release and other valproate products are not automatically equivalent.

Brands & products #

Historical catalogue observations. Prices and catalogue presence do not establish current availability or Indian approval.

Reference coverage #

Structured summary of selected adult uses, not an exhaustive monograph. Indian product authorization and local prescribing requirements have not been reconciled.
